Why use honey for a face mask?

In my last post on honey face wash, I shared some of honey’s incredible skin benefits. I’ve been loving honey face wash for some time now, and it turns out that honey works just as nicely as a hydrating, balancing, and renewing facial mask.

Honey is very gentle when used as a facial mask, so you don’t run the risk of drying or irritating skin like you can when using a clay mask. It actually helps to gently slough away the top layers of dead skin, leaving bright, fresh, smooth skin.

It’s also by far one of the easiest DIY face masks there are. Quickly throw it together, or even just use plain honey, and you’re good to go.

To recap from my last post, here are some honey mask benefits:

  • Has natural preservative and anti-aging properties
  • Is naturally antibacterial
  • Preserves the skin’s acid mantle
  • Regulates our skin’s PH
  • Is slightly astringent
  • Is slightly humectant
  • Helps to regulate our skin’s own production of oil

Ways to customize a DIY honey face mask

Honey is pretty spectacular in that it works with any skin type. Just like with honey face wash, you can have gorgeous results with plain honey, or you can make it even better by mixing in some optional ingredients.

You can do the same optional ingredients as for the honey face wash. If you have dry skin, you can add something like rose essential oil, or an anti-aging essential oil blend. If oily skin and acne are what you’re dealing with, a zit fighting essential oil blend is a great choice. Lavender is great for a variety of skin types. Adding rose hips powder is a wonderful thing to add, as it helps to heal blemishes, brighten skin, and even out skin tone.

Or, you can add other, different ingredients for various skin types. If you want to brighten skin, try adding a little turmeric powder. For acne prone skin, try mixing in a little cinnamon. Be careful to not use too much because cinnamon can irritate sensitive skin. I’m going to list measurement ideas below. Speaking of sensitive skin, adding some aloe vera gel to the honey is perfect for calming and soothing skin. If you have dry skin, try adding some plain, whole milk yogurt to the honey mask. Mashed avocado is also great for dry skin.

Have fun and experiment with a few different things and see what your skin likes best!

Choosing Honey to use for a mask

Just like with the honey face wash, the best choice is raw, unfiltered honey. Organic is even better. But, it is worth mentioning that in a pinch, any honey will still give good results.

If you can, it’s really good to support local beekeepers, and buy your honey and other bee products from them. I have a local one just down the road from where I live that I like to buy from. It’s a pretty interesting thought: Without bees, plants wouldn’t be able to reproduce, and all of life as we know it would end. I like to do what I can to support anyone who takes the time to care for bees.

Manuka honey face mask recipe

It’s important to mention that not all honey is created equal. Cheap honey from the grocery store will not have the same benefits as locally sourced honey.

The best type of honey that you can use for a recipe like this one is manuka honey. When you are able to incorporate manuka honey in this recipe, you will be able to create a DIY honey face mask for acne scars and overall regeneration of skin. When that happens, your skin becomes bright and fresh – something we all need once in awhile!

This honey face mask recipe for glowing skin will become a staple in your self-care routine in no time, I promise!

How to make a honey face mask

Schedule your self-care time and let your family know that you are out of commission, because you deserve to enjoy this honey face mask in peace.

Based on your skin type, you can use a variety of these ingredients to make the best face mask for you. And keep reading to learn about how different ingredients can help your skin…

Ingredients:

  • Honey
  • 3 drops of essential oils

Optional Ingredients:

  • Cinnamon
  • Turmeric
  • Yogurt
  • Honey
  • Aloe vera gel

Instructions:

It’s pretty simple! First, choose whether you want to use plain honey, or add another ingredient or two. Here is a quick reference for amounts and measurements:

  • Add 3 drops of essential oils to 1 tbsp of honey to get a 1% dilution
  • Mix in 1/2 teaspoon of any of the powders or spices (rose hips, cinnamon, turmeric) to 1 tbsp of honey
  • Mix equal parts yogurt, mashed avocado, or aloe vera gel to an equal part of honey

Once you’ve mixed in any optional ingredients, you simply apply the mask all over your face (avoiding the eye area, of course) and let it sit. You can let it stay on for anywhere from 15 – 60 minutes.

Things to know about using this honey face mask recipe

Unlike clay masks, you don’t risk the drying and possible irritation from leaving a clay mask on too long. Once it has been on as long as you’d like, gently rinse with warm water and pat dry. You can follow with a moisturizer if you feel like it.

That’s it! Very simple and easy. You can do a honey mask as often as you like. I try to do some type of facial mask about once or twice a week on a regular basis.

If you have extra face mask left over, you can save and use honey with essential oils or powdered herbs later. But go ahead and discard honey mixed with yogurt, avocado, or aloe vera gel, as those won’t keep long term.

As you probably know, different essential oils will do different things for you and your body. Before you begin using any essential oils, I recommend that you use the ones designed to help out a specific area (like how rose oil can help with dry skin).

It’s also important to mention that when you are using essential oils, use as pure of a source as possible. For me and my family, we prefer Plant Therapy for all of our essential oil needs.
