Startling shift: the iPhone 17 Pro loses a camera feature that defined its predecessors—Night mode in Portrait shots. Here’s what changed, why it matters, and what it could mean for users moving from older Pro models.
Apple has long enhanced iPhone photography each year, and the iPhone 17 Pro is no exception. It introduces a revamped front-facing Center Stage camera, a triple back-camera system with 48MP Fusion sensors, and new software capabilities such as Dual Capture. Yet, among these upgrades, one familiar capability is missing: you can no longer enable Night mode when shooting in Portrait mode on the iPhone 17 Pro.
According to an Apple support document, Night mode is not supported in Portrait mode on the iPhone 17 Pro. The list of compatible models for this feature includes the following: iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. Notably absent is the iPhone 17 Pro, marking a rare departure from the pattern of Pro models receiving Night mode in Portrait in previous generations.
This omission is noteworthy because Portrait mode with Night mode has been a go-to option for low-light, depth-while-clarity portraits since 2020. The change could leave heavy Portrait-mode users with a perceived downgrade when upgrading to the iPhone 17 Pro. If enough users voice concern, there’s a possibility Apple could restore the capability through a future software update.
For now, photographers who rely on Night mode in Portrait may need to adapt: shoot in standard Portrait mode and then apply Night mode in post-processing, or use alternative modes for low-light portraits. Keep an eye on Apple’s updates, as feature reinstatement can happen via iOS revisions.
