Get ready for a musical mystery that's already drawing major buzz! A new musical titled Satellites is about to launch a workshop presentation in New York, and the cast is absolutely stellar. But here's the question everyone's asking: can this impressive lineup and intriguing premise translate into a Broadway hit?
The workshop, featuring book, music, and lyrics by the talented Zack Zadek, is being meticulously crafted with Madeline Benson at the helm as music director. Adding to the auditory experience is Tony Award winner Cody Spencer, designing the sound. Maggie Burrows directs this exciting new piece, with casting expertly handled by Patrick Goodwin of The Telsey Office.
Leading the cast is none other than Tony Award nominee Phillipa Soo, whom you'll recognize from her unforgettable roles in the original Broadway casts of Hamilton and Amélie. Soo isn't alone in bringing star power to this production. Roe Hartrampf, of Netflix's Emily in Paris, will also be featured, along with Tony Award winner Beth Leavel, known for her performances in Broadway's The Prom and The Drowsy Chaperone. And the talent doesn't stop there! Emmy and Grammy Award winner Michael Park, an original cast member of Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen and also seen in Netflix's Stranger Things, joins the ensemble. Rounding out this impressive group are Caesar Samayoa from Broadway's Just In Time and Come From Away, and Morgan Dudley, currently gracing the Broadway stage as Eurydice in Hadestown and also of Disney's Descendants fame.
So, what's Satellites actually about? The producers are keeping most of the details tightly under wraps, adding to the intrigue. All we know so far is that Rachel Connors arrives in New Jersey as a mysterious event unfolds. This leaves a lot to the imagination, doesn't it?
Zack Zadek, the creative force behind Satellites, shared his excitement about the workshop, stating, "For a show that fully revolves around our characters’ psychological reality, I’m beyond stoked to work with this truly all-star cast and my incredible collaborators to give our very first invited audience a taste of the mystery of Satellites.” It sounds like we're in for a deep dive into the characters' minds!
Danielle Gimbal is serving as the score supervisor, ensuring the music is perfectly polished, and Matt Lacey is the stage manager, keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some industry insiders are already speculating that the limited plot reveal is a deliberate marketing tactic to generate buzz, while others suggest the show is still in its early stages of development. Is it a stroke of genius, or a sign of uncertainty? What do you think?
The workshop presentations are scheduled for Thursday, December 11, and Friday, December 12, at Ars Nova in New York City. Unfortunately, attendance is by invitation only. Theatre professionals interested in learning more can direct their inquiries to artistic@arsnovanyc.com.
Will Satellites become the next big Broadway sensation? With this cast and creative team, it certainly has the potential. But, as we all know, a stellar cast doesn't always guarantee a hit.
