Well, the theatre is open along with Opry Mills Mall! It’s a great place to visit!

I hired and trained the IMAX staff when this theater opened. Nice guys, but all gone now. Rumor has it that the 1570 film projector was removed/decommissioned after the second “Dark Knight” film earlier this year. It now has a “fauxmax” digital IMAX projector. Management did nothing but complain about the fact the projectionists got paid more than they did…running a 4 million dollar projection system. I will never enter that theater again.

Regal has been downgrading to D-IMAX circuit-wide. It sucks on huge screens where all the pixels are showing.

Went to see Star Trek Into Darkness at Opry Mills last week. Indeed it is digital “IMAX.” Complete with the Regal cinema video advertisem*nts before showtime and then 15-20 minutes of ads and trailers before the movie. The presentation was fine and all, but it seems kinda pointless with having the screen that size and only filling up a small portion of it when the IMAX scenes started. So it’s confirmed that they don’t even have the 15/70 film system at all there now? I can understand them also having a digital system for times when the studio will only send out a digital version, but will they no longer be showing any real 70mm IMAX? After having spent all that money to rebuild it and install it and putting the giant screen in, they aren’t going to use it?

I’ve discovered from the old Chief Projectionist that took over when I left that the 1570 equipment is there. Sad part is, there’s no one on staff there who can operate it.

I just need to point out that I see some uneducated comments about the 15/70 IMAX film projector at the Opry Mills IMAX theatre. I was just there recently and watched Interstellar presented in 15/70 format, someone there obliviously knows how to operate the equipment and the projector must be there. Now, if only the studios and IMAX would get on board and produce more films in 15/70 again we would get to enjoy that humongous screen like it was meant to be. The sad part is that digital technology limits the image size. Rumor has it that visible-range laser projection is on the horizon and will accommodate digital images large enough to fill IMAX screens the size at Opry Mills – http://optics.org/news/5/10/43. This is still my favorite theatre in Nashville to watch all my movies, it’s just a nice place.

Seating capacities at this theater

• IMAX Theatre – 470 seats

• Theaters 1, 2, 7, 14, & 19 – 121 seats

• Theaters 3, 4, 17, & 18 – 146 seats

• Theaters 5, 6, 8, 13, 15, & 16 – 183 seats

• Theaters 9 & 12 – 294 seats

• Theaters 10 & 11 – 430 seats

• Theater 20 – 300 seats

Theaters 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, & 19 are equipped to show 3D.

Theater #11 has an RPX screen that I think was installed in 2013.

UPDATE: The IMAX has been given a Cineworld-style makeover, reducing the capacity from 470 to 347. Theater 11 had its RPX branding removed, and in 2019, Theater 9 was converted to 4DX (reducing the capacity from 294 to 156) and 16 was converted to ScreenX.

last visited in 2018/19/20 (worked in the area part-time) and it was an average standard Regal IMAX theatre - it is located next to Dave and Busters inside Opry Mills (which is next to the massive Gaylord Opryland Hotel) and the courtyard area is very loud on Fri and Sat Nights just a heads up - if you live near the mall; its not bad but there are other theaters im sure that would be less touristy
