Oven baked French Fries are lower in fat and calories than deep-fried potatoes and you can even bake them in your toaster oven.
Whether it’s enjoying a heaping pile of fries along with a fully-loaded, juicy hamburger served with a chocolate shake or as a stand-alone order all by themselves, french fries are the perfect side dish.
These potato strips are baked, not fried. When you bake “french fries” in the oven, you eliminate most of the fat and calories, and they taste great. Made with a drizzle of olive oil and lightly seasoned, these thick cut oven french fries are so incredibly delicious.
Potatoes are low in calories and are fat, sodium, and cholesterol-free. They are a good source of fiber and keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. Potatoes are also a great source of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and iron. Now you can feel good eating them!

- Potato: You just need 1 potato to make a small batch of french fries. I prefer using an Idaho potato because they crisp nicely when baked.
- Olive Oil: I use extra virgin olive oil in this baked french fries recipe. Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed form of olive oil. It is unrefined oil and the highest-quality olive oil you can buy. Because of the way extra virgin olive oil is made, it retains more true olive taste. It also contain more of the vitamins and minerals found in olives. It’s my favorite type of olive oil to use, but you may use a lighter olive oil instead.
- Seasonings: Salt and black pepper.
How to Make This Recipe
- Scrub your potato. Either leave the skins on or peel them (I prefer the peel on).
- Slice the potato lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices, and cut again into 1/4-inch strips. As you cut the potatoes, toss them into a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes. This removes some of the starch from the potatoes, prevents them from turning brown, and helps the outside stay crispy.
- Remove from water. Pat dry, and toss in a bowl with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper.
- Place them on the toaster oven baking tray and bake them for about 25 minutes.
Expert Tips
- Cut potatoes into evenly sized pieces so they bake evenly and finish baking at the same time.
- I usually do not peel the potato but you certainly can if you want to.
- Leave a little space between the potato wedges so that they crisp all the way around and don’t stick together.

Make sure you use plenty of oil. The oil prevents the potatoes from sticking to the baking sheet and they also give the potato wedges crisp, caramelized edges. Also, be sure to leave space around the potatoes on the sheet. Overcrowding in the pan will cause the potatoes to steam rather than bake properly.

Toaster Oven French Fries

Ingredients
- 1 medium Idaho potato
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- pinch of salt
- pinch of pepper
Instructions
Set the toaster oven to “Bake” and preheat to 425 degrees F.
Scrub the potato.
Slice the potato lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices, and cut again into 1/4-inch strips. As you cut the potatoes, toss them into a bowl of cold water and let them soak for about ten minutes.
Pat the potato slices dry and toss them in a another bowl.
Add the olive oil, salt and pepper.
Place on the baking tray and cook for 25-30 minutes or until golden.
