One advantage of invariably
leading the fourth beet card from
a broken suit is that your partner
baa a chance to use his judgment.
He may be able to read the entire
hand and make the killing play.
In today's hand, West led toe
five ot diamonds — the fourth best
card of his very much broken dia-
mond suit. East won with the ses
of diamonds and South dropped
the Fine
Without considering the toll
imp.c.. us.....play. East
decided that there was no further
nourishment to diamonds. He
therefore shifted to the eight of
spades.
South grunted with satisfaction
and hastily put up the ace of
spades to win the second trick.
He then cashed the queen of dia-
monds, entered dummy with the
queen of hearts, and discarded his
meins, club on the Jack of dis-
Xt this point, of course, South
was sure to win tea tricks — with
seven trumps, two diamonds, and
the ace of spades. He tried for an
extra trick by leading a spade
from dummy, but was net greatly
disappointed to find that West had
both the king and the jack.
One reason for South’s satisfac-
ton was that he had been banded
the contract by East’s careless
play. East could have made the
killing return if he had simply re-
membered that West’s opening
lead was almost undoubtedly the
fourth best diamond.
$ What does East know about the
diamonds after he has won the
. irst trick? East can see the four
if diamonds in his own hand, and
be three of diamonds to dummy.
Hence West may have too deuce
of diamonds, but cannot have any
other diamonds lower than the
five. In other words. West cannot
have more than a five-card dia-
mond suit.
■ This reveals an Important fact
■ about the South hand. South to
bound to have at toast two dia-
monds. Why did South olav the
king of diamonds at Me first trick
if he also held at least one other
diamond? The obvious conclusion
is that South must also hold the
queen Of diamonds.
$ East should therefore see the
danger that South will eventually
get a discard on dummy’s jack of
diamonds. The surest way to pre-
vent this to th rise no dummy’s
queen of hearts before South has
the chance to unblock the dla-
tent should therefore return a
trump at the second trick, and
now South will not make the con-
fat

OFFICE PESTS
Back From Your Vacation!
Keep Mum About It Please
By HAL BOYLE
NEW YORK - One of the per-
ils of American office life these
summer days to the returned vaca-
tionist.
He insists that’ you hear about
his vacation—but he closes his big
ears like a ear door when you
want to tell him about your vaca-
tion.
How can you deal with him* You
can’t get away. He will even trail
you into the men’s room to relate
the strange things that happened to
him. You would think no one else
had taken a vacation before in the
history of the human race.
The only sure way to halt him
to to try to borrow money from him
or else top him by interrupting,
■Oh. by the wey, Joe, while you
were gone I saw a flying saucer.”
What the average office needs
from June until Labor Day is a
“vacation hour” each morning. For
the first so minutes of each work
day, the office staff could assem-
ble and listen on masse to the re-
turning pilgrims tell the sad and
wonderful story of what befell
them. Anybody who even mention-
od the word vacation the rest of the
day would be automatically fired.
RETURNS ON CRUTCHES
The office vacationists fall into
pretty standard types. Here are a
few you may recognize:
1. The postcard fiend—be writer
you a postcard as he leaves his
home and stops off at every other
Oiling station along the way to
mall more. Two weeks after he to
back at work, you are still getting
Shucks! Space
Ships Are Much
More Exciting
The vapor trails from a high fly-
ing aircraft over the city late
Tuesday afternoon left three Buck
Rogers fans to their Imaginations
Grown-ups may have seen the
vapor trails, but not Buddy Sel-
man, 13. Ronnie Hagar, 11. and
Fat Benson. 11.
Ronnie called the Reporter-News
newsroom with excitement to re-
port what he and Buddy had seen.
Fat telephoned almost as soon as
the line was free.
Here’s what they saw:
“A space ship goin‘ straight up
...i it weren’t goin‘ so slow R
might have been a rocket ship
it was s rocket ship or it looked
like it was 4 rocket, anyway
maybe it was a disc or some-
thing "
Both informants admitted in
protesting voices it might have
been an airplane or a weather
balloon — maybe.
Buddy is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. O. V. Selman, of 3101 South
Second St.: Ronnie the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hagar, of
3117 South Second St., and Pat is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Ben-
son, of 2102 Swenson St.
The CXA control tower at Mu-
nicipal Airport said the ‘space
ship” was aa airplane whose vapor
trails were highlighted by the set-
